National Start! Walking Day Is TODAY!

6 Apr

Today (Wednesday, April 6) is National Start! Walking Day, from the American Heart Association.

Did you know that just one hour of vigorous exercise will increase your life expectancy by two hours?  The American Heart Association invites you to make the pledge to start walking, become active and heart healthy.  Wear your sneakers to work on Wednesday, April 6 and take 30 minutes to get up and get moving.

Encourage your family, co-workers, and neighbors to participate.  Have fun and get a group to walk on a lovely spring day.  Or change one of your indoor, sit-down meetings into a walking meeting.  Walk more and eat well to live heart healthier and longer.

Heart issues are something very close to my family now, after my mom’s double bypass and valve replacement. It’s something I’m much more aware of now. Less than two days after my mom’s surgery, they had her up and walking around. No excuses. Her and I have started trying to walk more. She’s doing better than I am 🙂

So get up and walk, even just 30 minutes. You’ll be glad you did!

Ronald McDonald House Walk For Kids: April 10, 2011

9 Jan

It’s that time of year again! Time to start thinking about the 2011 Charity Events we’ll be participating in.

Our first one is the Ronald McDonald House Walk For Kids on April 10, 2011. The walk will take place at Exposition Park this year instead of Universal Studios. Which is actually great, since it’s right next to USC (fight on!)

Again, this is a very personal one for us. We have a family friend who has been helped out many times by the amazing volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House. So we walk for Cameron, Joanne, and their entire family.

My personal goal is $100, and I have chosen the *new* Long Beach Ronald McDonald House as the beneficiary.

My personal walk page is and our team walk page is

Can you donate even $5?

I’m also hoping to hold an auction on Facebook to raise money for this event, and others as well. If you can donate an item, please contact me at heathercrownelson {at} gmail {dot} com

P.S. Our other 2011 will be the Ride For Kids in May, March On Alzheimer’s in October, & CHOC Walk In The Park in October.

Support This Hero Against These Awful Protestors

4 Jan

My friend posted this on Facebook:

“If anyone lives near Bethalto, IL (near St. Louis) the Westboro Baptist Church is planning to protest at the funeral of LCpl Kenny Corzine, 23 years old, this Thursday. Please join the family in support during this especially difficult time. Our troops are America’s Heroes and no family should have to suffer that disgrace.”

If I lived nearby, I would absolutely be there.

New Year’s Eve Part 2: Party At My House!

1 Jan

So how did I spend my New Year’s Eve? By partying with the kidlets! Ryan and I stayed home with the kids, watched iCarly, played Xbox Kinect, and hung out. Naturally, I worked on lots of crochet hearts. Mom hung a banner in her room, and kept putting Happy New Year’s hats on everyone! Bubby loved it, so did Michael, Kaylee kept throwing it LOL We went outside early, around 10:30p.m. and set off some poppers! Michael kept playing the Xbox, until 11p.m. when I insisted we put on the NYE coverage. At 11:55p.m., we lost channel 7 and Dick Clark’s Rockin New Year’s Eve! So I turned to Carson Daly, which was actually just as good. We screamed and counted down, then ran outside banging our bowls and such! Michael got so carried away that he broke our chip bowl LOL We set off more poppers, along with our neighbors, and kept screaming Happy New Year!!! It was a great way to end 2010, and not say goodbye but instead “thanks for the memories”.

New Year’s Eve Part 1: Downtown Disney!

1 Jan

We started our New Year’s Eve celebration early, by going to Downtown Disney! It was a hassle parking (as you can imagine). But eventually Michael and I parked!

Our first stop was at the big Christmas tree by the Disneyland Hotel. We took a few cute pictures there. Then we wandered over to the Lego Store, one of Michael’s favorite places! He did a bit of building, a bit of playing.

We also took our new friend/addition to our family, Patches! I bought a bear for my Chemo Angel patient, a large version of Patches. And we have a small version. We plan on taking mini-Patches with us everywhere, take pictures, and send them to our patient!

We met up with my mom and grandma (who had taken their handicapped bus). We had a yummy lunch at La Brea Bakery, and shopped at Build A Bear workshop and World of Disney. Michael made Spiny, a dinosaur and his newest pet. I bought a few things for my patient’s bear. Gotta have the Disney souveniers!

A fun way to start a fun holiday!

2010: Nelson Family Year In Review

15 Dec

Well friends, it’s that time of the year. The time where we spend countless hours with the ones we love (or maybe tolerate) and reflect on the past year.

2010 has certainly been momentous for our family! It all began with the new addition in our family, Robert Thomas (aka Bubby). He’s a bundle of absolute joy and smiles. Our little princess Kaylee turned 2, and Michael entered 3rd grade where he’s thriving. Ryan went back to school for motorcycle mechanics, and I got a job at So Cal Officiant where every day I get to help couples plan weddings. I love my job 🙂 Mom had double bypass and valve replacement surgery. It was a difficult situation for everyone in our household, but we came out stronger because of it. I’m likely facing back surgery in the New Year, but I remain very optimistic. Nana hit the big 9-0 and is still going stronger than me some days!

We also spent countless hours and days giving back.

We participated in many charity events, and donated to numerous organizations. Here’s a list of organizations we donated to:
Adopt A US Soldier ~ Bears On Patrol and Miles The Bear ~ Broken Loaf Food Pantry ~ Chemo Angels ~ CHOC Walk In The Park ~ Coasting For Kids and Give Kids The World Village ~ Drum Hike ~ Friends Like Us ~ Great American 4th Of July Bike Parade ~ Inspired Grace ~ Kids Korner @ LB Sunday Market ~ Layers Of Love ~ LB Depot For Creative Reuse ~ Love In The Mirror ~ March On Alzheimer’s ~ NOH8 Campaign ~ Operation Easter Basket ~ Operation Gratitude ~ Paint The Park Pink ~ Relay For Life Lakewood ~ Relay For Life Long Beach ~ Ride For Kids ~ Ronald McDonald House Walk For Kids ~ Soldier’s Angels ~ Toys For Laughs Comedy Show, We Love LB Food Drive ~ Wish Upon A Wedding

We raised over $1000 for the big events we participated in: Ronald McDonald House Walk For Kids, Ride For Kids, Coasting For Kids, CHOC Walk In The Park, and March On Alzheimer’s.

My son, Michael, and I started Mikk’s Kid Krusaders, a charity family team. MKK participated in CHOC Walk In The Park. Our team raised $600 and blew past our goal of $350. Our family adopted a soldier from Soldier’s Angels. We also coordinated a drive for Operation Gratitude, in which we raised over $200 for them! I started my charity, Inspired Grace, which sends notes of encouragement and support to those who need it. My charity craft company, Brianne’s Basics, has expanded tremendously. We’re currently selling “Brianne’s Beanies”. For each beanie sold, 100% of the money goes to purchase more skeins of yarn. In turn, those skeins can make 4-5 beanies or scarves for the troops! Our crochet awareness flowers are going to be included in the Sundance Film Festival Gift Bags.

I was named a Kids Are Heroes Ambassador, Friends Like Us HUGS Program Rep, Bears On Patrol Supporter, and It All TABS Up Southern California Team Leader. We started a Kids Craft Corner at the Long Beach Sunday Market. I was a guest on the Radio Show for their one year celebration on December 8.

The outpouring of love and support has been amazing. We’ve had local businesses support us tremendously: Averyboo Arts, Caught In The Moment, Ceremonies By Carolyn, First United Methodist Church Of Lakewood, Frosted Cupcakery, Heather’s Cards, Long Beach Depot For Creative Reuse, Red Eye Media, Second Street Optical, So Cal Officiant, and Subject Clothing. We’ve also had many national organizations support us: Bear Haven Boutique, Lollipop Labs, Jodi from

I just want to say thank you. All of you have inspired me to be better, to work harder, and to love more. I thank all of you for your support, and I look forward to working with you in 2011! Happy Holidays!

With friendship and gratitude,
Heather and Ryan Nelson (Michael, Kaylee, and Robert)
